The Dostal Family

Dostal Family

The Dostal family shares a very close connection with the Minneapolis Heart Institute (MHI) Foundation thanks to their research and education about Brugada disease. After three immediate family members died as a result of the condition, every member of the Dostal family was examined and tested for Brugada disease, most of them being seen at the Minneapolis Heart Institute. As a result, ten family members have received a defibrillator and there are more than 70 next-generation members who will eventually need to be tested. Brugada disease is an inherited arrhythmia that causes the bottom chambers of the heart (the ventricles) to beat so fast that they can prevent the blood from circulating efficiently in the body. When this situation occurs, the individual will faint and may die within a few minutes if the heart is not reset. MHI Foundation is a leading center for cardiovascular treatment and has been instrumental in funding initial research and continuing education of Brugada disease.
