Guidelines

The lists below provide general guidelines for appropriate and inappropriate use of grants from the St. Jude Medical Foundation, along with the conditions each grant requestor and recipient must follow.

Each grant request will be reviewed by the Foundation to ensure compliance with IRS self-dealing prohibitions and other applicable requirements. For example, all U.S. grants can be made only to public charities under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Appropriate Use of Foundation Grants
  • Fellowships
  • Research, in limited circumstances
  • Natural disaster relief
  • Travel costs for doctors on humanitarian missions
Conditions
  • Each application must be received no less than 30 days prior to any scheduled event in which the funding is being requested for but no more than 120 days prior.
  • Each application must be accompanied by the IRS determination letter confirming the requesting entity’s status as a Section 501(c)(3) public charity.
  • Disbursement of funds will be made only after the Foundation receives the signed letter (provided by the Foundation) confirming status as Section 501(c)3 public charity has not been revoked or rescinded.
  • Each grant must be used for the purpose it was requested.
  • No grant will be conditioned on any person or institution purchasing any product or services from St. Jude Medical, Inc.
  • No part of a grant may be used to purchase devices that are made by St. Jude Medical, Inc. or that are competitive with devices made by St. Jude Medical, Inc.
  • Neither the Foundation nor the recipient of a Foundation grant organization will issue any press release with respect to the grant or the activities funded by the grant, or otherwise make any oral or written statements or disclosures with respect to the grant or such activities, without the prior written consent of the other party, except to those of such party’s employees and representatives as may need to know such information for purposes of such activities, and except as may be required by applicable law or by obligations pursuant to any listing agreement with or rules of any national securities exchange. In the event of any such required disclosure, the disclosing party will (a) provide the other party with written notice of the required disclosure at least 48 hours in advance of such disclosure, and (b) limit such disclosure to the minimum required under the applicable law or obligations.
  • All public acknowledgments of the grant, whether written or verbal, will refer to "St. Jude Medical Foundation" as the provider of the grant. The "St. Jude Medical Foundation" logo must be used in any written acknowledgments.
